Ano ba ang saysay ng hazing?

Posted by Kate on March 7, 2008

A friend sent me a message this morning to tell me about the recent news, updates or “developments” about what’s happening in UP Diliman these days. He wondered how those hazing pictures of Upsilon got out.

I did not know then what he was talking about. So I searched “upsilon hazing” in Google, which eventually led me to Jester-in-Exile.

Outrageous, indeed.

What’s the sense of hazing? I can’t see any sense to do that degrading act. I really don’t know why they do it. Do they have some unexplainable “rationale” for it? Is it because I’m not part of their organization that I can’t understand it?

I’m not really against fraternities and sororities. It’s the violence - hazing and frat wars - that I am against. Can’t they be separated from the other “ideals” and traditions of these organizations?

Another thing that somehow outraged me is the seemingly dirty politics in the University of the Philippines Diliman USC elections. I don’t know if the elections when I was still in college were this “controversial.” Maybe I was relatively apathetic then? Or is the university political set-up getting more and more like the kind of the politics or system that the “progressive” student leaders of UP despise?

Oh well, this is just an opinion. Or maybe just another voice unworthy to be heard. Or just another blogger. Sad.

This post is in condemnation of hazing.

Justice for all the victims, their families and friends.

Enlightenment for the fraternities (how about sororities?) who engage in this hideous act.

Peace for (and to) everyone.

the issue will die if nobody speaks of it.

    heck, it probably has.
